This document covers key topics for international nurses preparing to relocate to the U.S. through Florence, including NCLEX timelines, visa work restrictions, housing costs, and online learning options.
Do students need to pass the NCLEX before arriving in the U.S.?
Not necessarily. Students may begin studying for NCLEX after signing up and even take the test upon arrival in the U.S. However, clinical components of the program are conditional on passing.
How long does it take to study for and pass the NCLEX?
Florence offers two NCLEX prep options:
- Fast Track: 2-month intensive program
- Slow Track: 4-month flexible program
With focused study, we expect a 70–80% pass rate among international nurses.
What happens if I arrive in the U.S. without passing the NCLEX?
You will not be able to work as a nurse or participate in clinical training. It’s essential to prepare financially for this gap by budgeting for living expenses.
Can I begin online classes before passing the NCLEX or arriving in the U.S.?
Yes. Some online coursework is available before arrival. However, you must be in the U.S. and pass the NCLEX before starting clinical rotations.
Can I work while studying on an F-1 visa?
In your first year, only limited on-campus employment is allowed. Off-campus work, including nursing jobs, is not permitted until Year 2 with CPT authorization.
Can I work a non-nursing job while waiting to pass NCLEX?
No. F-1 visa regulations prohibit off-campus employment unless authorized. On-campus roles may be available, but they won’t cover all your expenses.
How much should I prepare for housing costs?
Florence helps arrange housing. Expect around $1,500/month for a private room (shared bath). Shared housing is cheaper. Prepare enough pocket money for at least 3–6 months.
Is any housing included?
Yes. Housing is included while you're enrolled. A 30-day grace period is available after your program starts or ends to help with transition.
How long does it take to get Authorization to Test (ATT) and complete biometrics?
It varies by state. Florence helps expedite this process. We recommend starting as soon as you enroll in NCLEX prep.
